How easy it is to convict the dead and defenceless – Simon Jenkins

How easy it is to convict the dead and defenceless – Simon Jenkins

Simon says:

the current police obsession with “historical celebrity sex abuse” is beyond bizarre.

Simon says:

I was one of many political journalists entertained by Heath after his fall.

Simon says:

Historical sex abuse is currently the nation’s favoured blood sport.

Simon says:

The past week’s assault on Heath’s reputation has clearly been driven by defensiveness over Jimmy Savile and by past (police) neglect of sex abuse cases.

Now that’s an interesting comment Simon

Simon Jenkins – served on the boards of British Rail 1979–1990 and London Transport 1984–86.

Was that when

British Rail bosses faced PR disaster in ’80s

The ad that was axed when British Rail heard rumours Savile was a necrophiliac

The now-defunct British Rail is the latest company to be caught up in the Jimmy Savile scandal after a lawyer working there during the 1980s claimed that it axed Jimmy Savile from its ‘Age of the Train’ campaign over rumours he was a necrophiliac. The lawyer has told police that British Rail bosses made the decision after hearing Savile had had sex with bodies at a morgue in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Bucks. Savile was then dropped from the TV campaign promoting the InterCity 125 service. The lawyer said he came forward with the information following the same claim from BBC presenter Paul Gambaccini on Radio 5, saying: “It struck a chord.” “I remember having a discussion about this in the 1980s and I thought the police should be aware of it.” “If there was a cover-up I wonder who else might have known. The explanation I had was that the revelations were intended to run in a newspaper but in the end they didn’t because of the damage this could cause to Savile’s charity work. “When Savile continued to have a positive public profile I assumed I’d been given false information but recent developments made me reconsider.” Savile denied these accusations in the 1990s, declaring: “Some people get hold of the fact that Jim likes looking after cadavers and say, ‘Aha, Jim’s a necrophiliac!’. I’m not a necrophiliac.”

I suppose axing the ad was a BRITISH RAIL BOARD decision Simon?

Edward Heath claims: Brothel keeper denies accusing former PM

Edward Heath claims: Brothel keeper denies accusing former PM

A former brothel keeper has denied accusing ex-Prime Minister Edward Heath of involvement in child sexual abuse.

Myra Forde’s ex-lawyer says she did not state that the late PM was a client, nor did she threaten to expose him if a prosecution against her was continued.

Forde says she has “no knowledge of any misconduct on his part” and recent media coverage had caused her distress.

Despite that denial

Investigation into Edward Heath child abuse claims to go national

A nationally coordinated police investigation into claims that the former prime minister Edward Heath sexually abused children is to be set up by the end of the week.

The inquiry will be led by a senior investigating officer who is likely to be appointed from either the Kent, Wiltshire or Hampshire force, all of which are investigating separate allegations that Heath sexually abused children.

Strange the silence from one whose tenure in government spans Heath and Thatcher?

Ken Clarke: big beast from the Cambridge mafia

As a student Clarke was said to be one of the “Cambridge mafia” of the 1960s which produced a clutch of men who would later become key figures in the Tory party. Clarke followed closely in the footsteps of Sir Leon Brittan

David Cameron is the fourth Conservative prime minister Clarke has served under after high-profile stints with Ted Heath, Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

He worked with them all

Is there more to Ken the Bloke?

Only a handful of ministers served right through the 18 years of the Thatcher and Major governments, and Clarke was the only member of that tiny group who also held office under Edward Heath in 1972-74, as a junior whip.

In fact, three of the “mafia” contemporaries – Leon Brittan, Norman Fowler and John Gummer – remained friends and allies of Clarke.

Child abuse loophole closed

People accused of seriously abusing children or vulnerable adults who try to escape justice by staying silent or blaming someone else, will face up to 10 years in prison Ken Clarke announced

Does that include politicians Ken?

Ken Clarke: police assure me that they are not investigating me

Ken Clarke: police assure me that they are not investigating me

Former chancellor Kenneth Clarke today said that police had assured him that they were never investigating him for sexually abusing a boy.

A spokeswoman for the Conservative grandee contacted Exaro today following our report at the weekend about how the Old Bailey was told that South Yorkshire Police was investigating Clarke over an allegation that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old boy.

4 charts that show how George Osborne wants to sell more public assets in 12 months than Britain has in the last 20 years

4 charts that show how George Osborne wants to sell more public assets in 12 months than Britain has in the last 20 years

As the Government sets about implementing a programme of sell offs, new research shows George Osborne will raise more cash from the sale of public assets this year than from the last two decades of privatisations combined.

Tory plans to pass publicly owned services into the hands of private companies are likely to generate around £31.8 billion for the Chancellor in 2015/16 with parts of RBS, Royal Mail and Lloyds up for grabs.

Mr Osborne began his programme of sell-offs this week when he authorised the disposal of £2.1 billion of shares in RBS, representing a £1 billion loss to the taxpayer, seven years after the bank was rescued by a £45 billion Government bailout.

Shares in RBS are trading 33 per cent lower than when the Labour government initially purchased them. If the Government sells all it’s holding at this price it will end up losing around £15bn of public funds.

Back in 2013, Under the Coalition, 70 per cent of the public stake in Royal Mail was sold, and last month Mr Cameron announced half of the remaining shares had left public hands.

Propaganda: Do You Know You’re Soaking In It?

Propaganda: Do You Know You’re Soaking In It?

Each and every day we are subject to propaganda, yet many of us are oblivious to the fact that we are being manipulated so frequently. In light of compelling information and evidence which supports largely predictable outcomes, propaganda can be used to confuse, obstruct, and distract individuals and society from clearly understanding the issues at hand. As we face serious and interconnected challenges, it is important to understand the role propaganda plays in society.

Propaganda is a form of communication geared towards manipulating and influencing the mindset of individuals through a series of emotionally charged messages. It can be used to either promote certain causes or to negatively influence and persuade people to support various ideological positions. Propaganda is powerful because everyone is susceptible to it. Robert Cialdini, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University, author of the best-selling book Influence, outlines why people don’t realise they are being subject to propaganda: “In order to deal with it, we need shortcuts. We cannot be expected to recognise and analyse all the aspects in each person, event, and situation we encounter in even one day. We do not have the time, energy, or capacity to process the information; and instead we must often use our stereotypes, our rules of thumb to classify things according to a few key features and then to respond without thinking when one or another of these trigger feature are present.”

Edward Heath 1961

Edward Heath 1961

Friends loyal to Sir Edward Heath blast police for only making allegations public after his death

Tory MP for Lincolnshire Michael Brown:

‘So if there was any paedoism going on by Sir Edward Heath it would have been with the connivance of his special protection officers who guarded him from 1970 on June 18 until the day he died.

‘You don’t need to be Inspector Clouseau to work that one out.’

That seems logical. What follows is more ambiguous

He (Michael Brown) dismissed reports that a 12-year-old was picked up in August 1961 by Sir Edward and taken to his Mayfair flat.

‘We know what he was doing for the month of August because he wasn’t even in Britain. This man who claims to have been paedoed by him in 1961 in August couldn’t have been there because he wasn’t in Bexley, he wasn’t in Kent.’

From Heath’s autobio (hard copy):

(p 210) 3 August in the House of Comons – speech

(p 211) ” As soon as our application to enter into negotiations with the Community had been accepted, I went off to join the Seligmans on holiday…… at St Jacut-de-la-Mer in Brittany. A few days later, on August 18th…………(picked) up copy of English newspaper….

So when did he actually go on holiday? After 3rd August obviously.

From 3rd /4th August to 18th, when he was in Brittany – would that be considered ” a few days later”? Or would a timescale of 10th/11th August, for the start of Heath’s holiday fit the description better?

Meir Ettinger: Far right Jewish activist held over attack in which 18-month-old Palestinian boy was burned alive

Meir Ettinger: Far right Jewish activist held over attack in which 18-month-old Palestinian boy was burned alive

Meir Ettinger started his career in anti-Arab activism in relatively modest and unexceptional fashion. The young man now being designated as the number one Jewish terrorism suspect of Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency would, as a 20-year-old in 2011, go into the shops and stalls of Jerusalem’s Machane Yehuda market. He would ask the storekeepers if they employed Arabs and if the answer was “yes”, he would place an “x” next to the store’s name in his notebook. It was a marker for a boycott by fellow Arab haters.

Now Mr Ettinger has become the first far right activist arrested after last Friday’s attack by Jewish extremists in the West Bank, in which an 18-month-old Palestinian boy was burned alive and his parents and brother were severely wounded. The Shin Bet is not saying whether he has been linked to last week’s attack, only that he was taken into custody for “involvement and activity in a Jewish extremist organisation”.

Whether he is innocent or guilty of being involved in the Duma attack, Mr Ettinger has become the face of a violent extremism that many Israelis fear is spinning out of control and beginning to threaten the fabric of their society.

Recent years have seen a spate of hate assaults on Palestinian persons and property and mosques and churches.

Agreed ! Tony Blair should face trial for war crimes over Iraq, says Jeremy Corbyn

Agreed ! Tony Blair should face trial for war crimes over Iraq, says Jeremy Corbyn

Never did I think I would agree totally with a British politician, but on this 1 I totally do…..

Tony Blair should be charged with war crimes for ordering the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Labour leadership frontrunner Jeremy Corbyn has claimed.

In an extraordinary attack on Labour’s most successful ever leader, Mr Corbyn said that ‘those that made the decisions’ in the run-up to the conflict should be put on trial.

He said Mr Blair should be made to ‘explain’ launching an ‘illegal’ war which he said helped cause recent migrant deaths in the Mediterranean.

Mr Corbyn was one of the most rebellious Labour MPs during the decade when Mr Blair was prime minister, voting against the Iraq War, ID cards and foundation hospitals.

But his demand that a former party leader stand trial for war crimes marks a dramatic escalation in the hostilities in the Labour party, weeks before it must choose a successor to Ed Miliband.

It comes as a fresh row has erupted over the delayed publication of the inquiry into the conflict, with David Cameron demanding chairman Sir John Chilcot name a date for it to be finally released.
