Sex abuse victims to pursue Janner in civil court

Sex abuse victims to pursue Janner in civil court

LORD JANNER, who has been accused of child sexual abuse, will face court regardless of whether the decision not to prosecute him is overturned.

An independent QC is examining the decision by Alison Saunders, the director of public prosecutions, not to prosecute Janner over 22 cases of alleged child sexual abuse because he has Alzheimer’s disease and is not fit to stand trial.

But Liz Dux, a lawyer at Slater and Gordon who is representing some of the alleged victims, said they would pursue civil claims against Janner even if the independent review upholds the decision not to prosecute.

Fracking doesn’t harm drinking water: EPA

Fracking doesn’t harm drinking water: EPA

ALBANY — Six months after Gov. Andrew Cuomo banned fracking as too hazardous, the federal government released a report Thursday saying there’s no evidence the drilling practice has caused widespread harm to drinking water in the United States.

“Based on available scientific information, we found out that hydraulic fracturing activities in United States are carried out in a way that has not had widespread systemic impact on drinking-water resources,” said Thomas Burke, deputy assistant administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

“It is a new lens, so we can all make better decisions about public health.”

The report, issued in draft form after three years of study, cautioned that safeguards are still needed because some drinking water has been contaminated.

Cervical cancer jab cost our girl her life

Cervical cancer jab cost our girl her life

Rebecca Kerr, who died of a rare form of leukaemia in January 2011, is one of the teenagers whose parents believe she died as a result of the HPV vaccine.

It prevents infection by the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus which is behind the majority of cervical cancer cases.

Last night her father David, 53, a gas engineer from Essex, said his daughter became unwell within weeks of receiving the second dose of the vaccine just before her 13th birthday.

The teenager, who was studying for her GCSEs at Francis Bardsley School for Girls in Romford, died of lymphoblastic lymphoma a year later.

Mr Kerr said: “It was rare that she ever got poorly and yet she got ill so quickly after having the vaccine. There is no doubt in our minds that there is a link, although the doctors maintain they do not know why children get leukaemia.”

Portugal decriminalised drugs 14 years ago – and now hardly anyone dies from overdosing

Portugal decriminalised drugs 14 years ago – and now hardly anyone dies from overdosing

Portugal decriminalised the use of all drugs in 2001. Weed, cocaine, heroin, you name it — Portugal decided to treat possession and use of small quantities of these drugs as a public health issue, not a criminal one. The drugs were still illegal, of course. But now getting caught with them meant a small fine and maybe a referral to a treatment program — not jail time and a criminal record.

Among Portuguese adults, there are 3 drug overdose deaths for every 1,000,000 citizens. Comparable numbers in other countries range from 10.2 per million in the Netherlands to 44.6 per million in the UK, all the way up to 126.8 per million in Estonia. The EU average is 17.3 per million.

Adam Afriyie: Conservative who says MPs shouldn’t ‘scrabble around on £67,000’ could make millions on sale of his home

Adam Afriyie, MP for Windsor, had bought the six-storey, grade II* Listed Georgian house in November 2005 for £7.25m, the Times reported. The home is now listed on upmarket estate agent Hathaways for £16.75m.

A critic of the parliamentary expenses system, Mr Afriyie, who is estimated to be worth upwards of £50 million, courted controversy when he told Newsnight in February 2015 that “you can’t expect an MP to scrabble around on a salary of £67,000”.

Just Who are the Top Shareholders of Monsanto?

Just Who are the Top Shareholders of Monsanto?

People like to talk nasty about Hugh Grant, Monsanto’s CEO, and obviously a shareholder. The same goes for Bill Gates. He purportedly owns millions of shares of Monsanto stock as well. But who are the real owners of Monsanto? The answer might be shocking.

The real owners of Monsanto stock are institutions, and people who hide behind those institutions, not individuals like Gates and Grant. According to multiple sources, five investment funds are the top shareholders in Monsanto, with the Vanguard Group, Inc. at the top. You can view the rest below.
